IBA International Internship Program
As a participant in The University of Texas at Austin’s International Board of Advisors (IBA) Internship Program, you are offering UT students an unparalleled opportunity to gain international work experience while immersing themselves in different cultures.
The following guide provides links and tips for posting your internship for all UT Austin students. IBA internships will be promoted individually and as a collection to students across the university. In addition, we will promote your opportunities to targeted student populations based on the skills listed in your posting. Combined, these postings offer both general and targeted visibility across the Forty Acres.
Post Your Internship
IBA internships are managed in the campus-wide job board, HireUTexas Powered by Handshake. HireUTexas provides employers one platform to post an internship or job accessible by all UT Austin students across our 16 colleges and schools.
Create or logon to your HireUTexas account to create or edit your employer profile and to post your opportunity.
IBA Internship Criteria
IBA internships should:
- take place at an office/location outside of the U.S.;
- provide a professional learning experience for the student;
- provide the student a workspace within the organization’s office;
- provide regular supervision and mentorship;
- be a paid opportunity;
- We recommend the equivalent to U.S. $20/hour based on your country’s cost of living calculation
- be full-time, offering up to 40 hours per week; and
- provide a work visa, if required for the specific country.
How to Post Your Internship
- From the left navigation bar, select Jobs under Postings
- Click the [Create job] button
- Enter your job description, title, location, pay and other details; please be sure to include (IBA) in the title so that we can process it appropriately on our end – Tip: the fewer requirements you create (e.g., schools, classification, majors, GPA), the more students will view your posting
- You will be able to choose for students to apply within their Handshake account or on a separate website (the typical choice is via a separate website) – Tip: when selecting to apply under a separate website, you can include instructions to send materials to a specific email address
- Select the Basic (free) plan for posting your jobs to the UT Austin system rather than the national/enterprise system
IBA Posting Tips
The IBA has designed a program offering students international full-time and paid internships and that include work visas, if applicable. The tips below will help you post your internship in HireUTexas, craft a description that meets the IBA program criteria and make your internship standout.
Essential Responsibilities & Day-to-Day Duties
Your internship description should focus on the essential responsibilities of the internship with a few added day-to-day duties to help the student see themselves in the position. You may also want to consider adding a short description of the department or division in which the intern will be working. Your posting should also include the types of skills and experiences you are seeking in the intern, as well as a class year if relevant (i.e., graduating May 2025).
Hours
The IBA program offers full-time internships. Students are expected to work up to 40 hours over five days per week.
Intern Wages
IBA internship program opportunities must be paid. We recommend offering a competitive or above competitive wage for your internship program.
While wage rates differ per country/economy, please consider offering, at minimum, the equivalent to U.S. $3,200/month ($20/hour) based on your country’s cost of living standards. You can compare $3,200/month in Austin to your city using an international cost of living calculator – these websites are widely available.
International Insurace
Students participating in an IBA internship program will be required to have overseas insurance through Texas Global at the cost of $19 per month. Intern host employers may want to consider providing the student with the funds to offset the cost of insurance.
Highlight the IBA Initiative
Consider including in your internship description a high-level summary of the IBA program, such as:
UT Austin IBA Internship Program: We are recruiting UT Austin students who are interested in living and interning abroad. Our company’s CEO is a proud UT alum (BA Economics) and a member of President Hartzell’s International Board of Advisors (IBA). The IBA provides advice, support and direction to the University’s president and leaders, strengthens and enhances UT’s global visibility, and supports its aspiration to become the world’s highest-impact public research university.
Internship Support
Consider including supervisory and professional development highlights. Here is an example:
Each intern receives a comprehensive orientation and is provided ongoing support from mentors and supervisors to develop a strong foundation to their international experience. Interns will be invited to participate in networking events, workshops and seminars with professionals and other interns from around the world. This exposure helps build valuable connections and enhances career prospects.
Promote the Country Experience
Consider including a few highlights of the in-country experience, such as:
South Korea offers a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Students will be able to explore its rich cultural heritage spanning music, art, literature and much more. Students will experience the high standard of living and safety index which result from South Korea’s modern transportation, health, education and public systems, in addition to its innovation economy.
Housing Support
Will you offer support finding housing or will you sponsor housing? If so, let the student know in the posting.
Visa Support
If your country requires visa sponsorship, include in your description that your organization will sponsor the visa and support the process.
